What was the reason Spike left the site?

He was mainly concerned that his association with prepatched content would hinder the site's potential. Some people were unclear about his exact role here, but most were completely fine with him just being the owner. I imagine he had other considerations, as well. Ultimately, it was his decision to keep it simple.

seems like there were a few overlapping reasons and people are just filling in the gaps with whatever they heard. if spike was worried about prepatched stuff and also dealing with staff drama, i can see why he’d want to step away rather than keep arguing. the cdromance situation sounds messy too, with downloads split behind another account system. i’ve also had random off-topic links shoved into forum chats during all that, including https://tongitsgogame.com/ and https://7up7downgame.com/ which didn’t help the signal-to-noise at all. hope the site can keep things focused and transparent going forward.

From what I remember, Spike mostly left because of disagreements/drama within the community and staff at the time.

A lot of old ROM hacking communities went through periods like that unfortunately. People get burned out, lose motivation, or move on to other projects/sites.

Not sure if there was ever one single “official” reason though.

Newer uploads are indeed disabled, but you can still download some of the older archived files there. Head on over to RetroGameTalk, where they have a message board and a very large active community. Create an account there and just poke around the site a bit, and you'll find what you're looking for.
