Mortal Kombat Arcade Edition v1.0a is the definitive version made by Linkuei. With his permission, Rael G.C. made some graphical improvements: Improved Kano, Rayden, Liu Kang, Sub-Zero, Scorpion and Sonya at the character selection screen in order to get closer to the arcade. Improved Sub-Zero fatality to show the front size of the heads. Reduce the “greenness” of the Goro’s Lair new parallax. Fixed Johnny Cage skin colors. Improved mini avatar for Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Kano. Reworked Rayden stance animation and victory standing, restoring the “blue” eyes. Reworked Scorpion/Sub-Zero head on victory standing. Reworked Sub-Zero sprites on […]

hi Rael
great works man !!
Just a curiosity

will be this version 2.2, the last one ? or not ?
it´s Just a curiosity

Thanks

This is awesome! Every year we're getting little improvements to the game thanks to skilled modders like Rael G.C. Lots of care has gone into this.

This new v2.2 Mar 2025 edition is great! I myself have patched it with BillyTimeGames! 6 button controller fix so it works with the wireless 8-bit DO controllers.

Indeed, this was missing. I just added a Changelog section. But to answer you directly:

Improvements over V2.1:
- Fixed Sonya broken leg animation while knocked waiting for fatality
- Removed Kano red spots from all sprites
- Removed Rayden yellow spots from all sprites
- Improved Rayden ending 1 screen (improved lightning, blue eyes and face lining)
- Small improvement to Liu Kang ending 2 screen (the blurred faces at the background)
- Improved Liu Kang head rotation on J. Cage fatality (issue introduced in V1.7)
- Improved J. Cage head rotation on J. Cage fatality (issue introduced in V1.7)

It is great to see someone concerned with this stuff and fixing it. Thank you!

BTW, Goros idle and defending anims have inconsistent frame offsets.

Hey, great work! I was wondering if two things would be possible, even if they would deviate from the original game:
1) Make Liu Kang's fatality end with a decapitation like Johnny Cage's
2) Replace Johnny's head sprite with Jean Claude VanDamme
Just some ideas and wishes 😅
Anyway, excellent work, thoroughly enjoying it!!!

This is definitely my top pick for the console version of the first Mortal Kombat. Actually like playing this one more than the original arcade version. The only version that tops it would be the Mugen version, Mortal Kombat Komplete, which includes all the games. You can run, pull off combos, and even fight as Reptile. The music on the Genesis for the first two MK games is fantastic. Now, there are a few technical glitches that might not have been mentioned before. The pit stage has some lag, unlike the original, and not sure if it's due to the moving clouds or something else, but the lag is pretty noticeable. At the courtyard stage, sometimes when you jump up and down or if an enemy receives an uppercut and falls back down (camera jumps), you can see a quick screen tear in the backdrop (a black line) than disappears, and there's another stage (can't recall) where a white line appears and disappears. It's not game-breaking, but it's definitely noticeable. Lastly, the only wish for this game is an option in the settings to let Reptile be playable and replace the Mortal Kombat logo on the character select screen (like in Mugen), of course balanced out so he doesn't move as fast as the Reptile you fight in single-player. Aside from these minor nitpicks, this is truly one of the best ways to enjoy the first Mortal Kombat.

@Jerry R Yes, I'm trying to improve the performance and fix the glitches. Thank you for reporting them!

I've played your improvement hack through every iteration released and have found very few glitches or performance issues (maybe that Pit lag was noticeable but I couldn't quite put my finger on what was off)
but one thing that happens every single time I do a playthrough, (and it's been in every updated version for as long as I can remember now so maybe there is nothing for it?) is Sonya's PCM sample for her death by Snu-Snu looking ass throw sounds like it gets pitch shifted up but I think it just plays about 200% faster than the original sample (Ki-Ya!) and makes her sound like an angry and excessively violent Chipette who wants nothing more than to remove Alvin, Simon and Theodore from the stage to become the worlds best and ONLY band of plucky rodent based cover band since Chuck E Cheez' animatronic animal band called it quits when Mr Munch found Jasper T Jowls overdosed on a personal pan pepperoni and fentanyl with extra cheese and the rest called it quits because continuing without the Jowl-jamming Jasper on the bottom end seemed like a huge slap in the face not only to Jas and his grieving family but all the fans that had been diehard followers since the old days playing punk rock at Henriettas Hardcore Henhouse and doing secret shows at their old local venues under monikers like Kray-Z-Bred, House of the Rising Crust and even the Seldom used but always awesome high energy setlist as Mikey Marinara and The Sauce"...

I'm not sure if my dumb joke at the end of this comment is going to be lost on you as a Brazilian as its making fun of a couple uniquely American bits of pop culture stupidity with the Robot Rat Pizzaria and awful cartoon about singing vermin who tour the world singing cover songs and having low stakes jet setting adventures around the third world, but it's not important if you get it or not.... I'm just inclined to smoke a lot of dope and make terrible jokes on the Internet for my own amusement because I'm high as hell and bored..... That thing about Sonyas PCM sample doing that sped up thing is accurate though. Look into it if you want. It's not game breaking at all but it is jarring to me every time. Lol. Keep these polished up improvements coming man and let's eventually get to the blood improvement patch I talked about that you commented on RHDN or where ever that was. Haha. Just may have to crash course myself in 68000 assembly and get the good stuff flying like the arcade version do. Cheers!
