Super Monaco GP 1992 — REV 0002 Beta | Major Mega Drive overhaul — Playable Online

Hi everyone,

I'd like to introduce Super Monaco GP 1992, a long-term Mega Drive project I've been developing as part of 68K Revival.

The project started as an attempt to transform the original Super Monaco GP into a recreation of the 1992 Formula One World Championship, but over time it has grown into a much deeper modification involving circuits, graphics, physics, CPU behaviour, audio, game interfaces and championship logic.

The project has evolved through three main stages:

2024 — Original Release
2025 — REV 0001
2026 — REV 0002 Beta

REV 0002 is the most extensive revision so far and is currently almost complete. The full reconstruction of Silverstone is the final major circuit update still in development.

Some of the changes introduced throughout the project​

1992 World Championship

• Complete 1992 driver line-up with digitized photographs.
• Real 1992 championship calendar.
• New circuits required for the 1992 season, including Kyalami, Interlagos, Montmeló and Magny-Cours.
• Rebalanced car performance.
• Much more aggressive and challenging CPU behaviour.
• Updated trackside advertising based on the 1992 season.

Gameplay & Physics

• World Championship races increased to six laps.
• Wet races introduced at Montmeló, Magny-Cours and Spa-Francorchamps, with reduced grip and adapted CPU behaviour.
• Kerbs no longer apply the original gameplay penalty when the player's car runs over them.
• Speedometer recalibrated to display realistic speeds without reducing the actual performance or movement speed of the cars.
• Goal is to retain the arcade character of Super Monaco GP while making the racing more coherent and challenging.

Graphics & Presentation

• Digitized photographs for the 1992 drivers.
• Digitized images of the real 1992 cars added to the driver presentation screens.
• Improved title-screen car graphics.
• Female model graphics extensively reworked by rewriting the tileset and correcting the character proportions.
• Mechanic palettes separated from the car palettes.
• Fonts, colours, interfaces and several graphical elements revised.
• Interlagos and Magny-Cours minimaps corrected.

Audio

• New DAC voice samples.
• Original gearbox sound replaced with a more realistic gear-shift sound.
• Engine audio timing was also modified to compensate for the shorter gear-shift sample, allowing the engine to begin revving earlier and producing a more natural transition between shifting and acceleration.

REV 0001 refinements

• Driver standings expanded to correctly display longer names such as M. Schumacher instead of M. Schumach.
• The generic YOU label in the standings was replaced with the actual player name.
• Pit-screen colours and lap information corrected.
• Pre-race team instructions updated.

REV 0002 Beta​

The current version is fully playable online.

Silverstone is the final circuit undergoing a complete reconstruction before REV 0002 is considered finished.

For now, I'm making the project available through the 68K Revival online emulator, so anyone interested can try the current version directly in their browser.

The website does not provide the original ROM. You provide your own compatible copy of Super Monaco GP, the patch is applied for the online session, and the game runs directly in the browser.

I'm particularly interested in feedback from people familiar with the original Super Monaco GP, Mega Drive ROM hacking or 68000 development.

There is a lot of reverse-engineering work behind this project, and I'm gradually documenting that work as part of 68K Revival.
